Equipment Guidance | Outlearn Activities Guide

‘Equipment guidance’ gives you an idea on what a leader may need when taking their group further afield. They will have to be aware of the group’s needs, different activities delivered, and know the environment in which these activities will take place. It can be a daunting task having to decide on particular equipment, which is why this page is here.  

Leader’s bag

The leader is responsible for providing a safe environment for the group to work in. To do this the leader must provide an emergency bag. The type of equipment within the bag will depend on the time of year.

Emergency bag list:

First aid kit:

  • Gloves (latex)
  • Bandages
  • Plasters
  • Dressings
  • Eye wash/sterile water
  • Scissors
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Emergency whistle
  • Burns kit (burns gel/burns dressing)
  • Tick remover

Session equipment

A session could consist of finding elves , making nettle soup , or even making smelly cocktails , meaning you will have to have extra kit in your bag to carry these out effectively. Some sessions have fire within them, and to do this you will need to include a fire box and cooking equipment within your leader’ bag. You may find that during the winter, when it gets colder, it is important to make a fire .

Fire box:

  • Fire blanket
  • Gauntlets (fireproof)
  • Fire Steel
  • Matches (preferably wind/waterproof)
  • Cotton wool
  • Vaseline

Extra kit:

  • Water
  • Bucket
  • Protective gloves x 12
  • Tools : Pruning saw/bow saw/hatchet or bill hook/knife/mallet/hand drill
  • Scissors (for activities)
  • Wool (different types)
  • String
  • Canvas/fabric
  • Tarp
  • Ghillie kettle

Cooking equipment:

  • Steel saucepan x3
  • Popcorn cooking pot
  • Sieve
  • Tripod with chain and hook (optional)
  • Grill (suspend pots off fire)
  • Cutlery (fork/spook/knives)
  • Chopping boards
  • Knives
  • Wooden spoons/ladle
  • Mugs x 12 (box for mugs)
