Foil Parcels | Outlearn Activities Guide

If you have good chopping skills or want to develop them, then this activity is for you. The aim of making foil parcels is to prepare, create, and cook apples over an open fire. This allows children to better understand nature, their environment and develop a foundation of wild culinary skills.

Resources

  • Foil/Bowl/Knife/Chopping Board
  • Zip Lock Bags
  • Cooking Oil/Salt and Pepper/Veg Stock Cube/Range of Vegetables or Fruit
  • Herbs (Optional)
  • Table Spoon (tbsp)
  • Fire Kit /Water/Gloves/Bucket

Explanation

Place one square of foil on top of another one and brush the top one with oil. For ease you can put the foil into a bowl to fill it. Chop vegetables into similar sized pieces and put in the foil. If ability is low then pre-chop the vegetables and put them into zip lock bags then they can choose, which vegetables to put into the parcel.

Add in salt and pepper, if you like it, then add a tbsp of cooking oil or water. Wrap the inner foil and seal by scrunching up the edges.

Reinforce your parcel by wrapping the second square of foil around it, then once you are ready, place into the embers of the fire.

Try out different combinations in your parcel. Why not try a root vegetable parcel. Put in some (or all) of the following vegetables; potato, swede, parsnip, onion, carrot, sweet potato, or even try a Mediterranean vegetable parcel with a mixture of red, yellow and green peppers, cherry tomatoes, onion, courgettes, and mushrooms. Whole individual sweet potatoes cooking in foil are delicious or even a fruit parcel of apple, pear, plum & blackberries is great too.
