Campfire Chicken & Dumplings | Outlearn Activity Guide

‘Campfire chicken & dumplings’ is a great outdoor activity suitable for young children of all abilities. The aim of campfire chicken & dumplings is to create Boggis’s favourite meal. This allows children to better understand nature and their environment and to embrace the story.


  • Fire Kit /Dutch Oven/Knife/Ladle/Spoon/Fork
  • Pot/Mixing Bowl
  • 3 lbs. chicken thighs - cubed
  • 1 tbs. vegetable oil
  • 2 tbs. butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion - finely diced
  • 2/3 cups carrots - finely diced
  • 2/3 cups celery - finely diced
  • 1 tsp. thyme
  • 1 tsp. sea salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 32 oz. chicken stock
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • 2 cups self raising flour
  • 4 tbs unsalted butter, cubed
  • 2 tbs shortening (Trex/Flora white)
  • 3/4 cup whole milk


Before you leave home

  • Cut chicken thighs into 1/2 inch cubes.
  • Put into resealable bag.
  • Finely dice the celery, carrots and onion.
  • Put into resealable bag.
  • Put salt, pepper and thyme into resealable bag.

Ready for activity

Thaw out any frozen ingredients and light fire. Set up dutch oven for frying, then add vegetable oil and brown chicken on all sides, not cooking all the way through.

Remove chicken thighs and drippings from the dutch oven and set aside. Add butter, onion, celery and carrots. Cook until the onions become translucent and the celery and carrots become soft. Add your browned chicken back in, along with the chicken stock, thyme, salt and pepper. Cover and let simmer for twenty minutes.

Using a fork, ‘cut in’ butter/shortening into the flour until butter is pea-sized. Pour in the milk and mix just until moistened. Spoon the dumpling mixture onto the surface of the bubbling chicken mixture, about 2 tablespoons per dumpling. Cover the pot and let simmer for 25 minutes. Don’t remove lid until cooking is done.
