Deadwood Den | Outlearn Activities Guide

Deadwood is an amazing resource within the woodland and helps lots of different types of bugs. The aim of deadwood den is to combine natural materials into a home for the beetles, larvae, centipedes, woodlice, and fungi. This allows children to better understand nature, their environment and to express their creativity.

  • Punk Wood (over seasoned wood)

Explanation

Collect lots of thick sticks, different sized logs, and dried out wood (punk wood). To make an ‘eco pile’ just create an area and stack logs there, making sure they will not fall. To create a ‘deadwood den’ make sure you have your resources, then pick an area of the track. Think for ways of presenting your den, it could be; suspended, stacked (ie. wigwam), even made into an elf house, any ideas will be great.
