Bannock | Outlearn Activity Guide

Have you ever made bread? The aim of making bannock bread is to prepare, create, and cook bread over an open fire. This allows children to better understand nature, their environment and develop a foundation of wild culinary skills.

  • Plastic Food Bags (Zip Lock)
  • A Cup
  • Chopping Board
  • Tea Spoon (TSP)
  • Table Spoon (TBSP)
  • Flour/Baking Powder/Salt/Powdered Milk/Oil or Butter/Herbs
  • Fire Kit/Water/Gloves/Bucket

Put all of these ingredients into a zip lock plastic bag; 1 cup of flour, 1 level tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt, 2 tbsp. powdered milk, 2 tbsp. herbs, 1 tbsp. of cooking oil or butter then mix dry ingredients together in bag. Gradually add small amounts of water while mixing the ingredients together until the mixture makes a dough.

When the dough has formed, put a clean green stick into the bag and form a ‘sausage shape’ of dough onto the end of the stick and then hold the stick over the hot ash (minimal flames is best), turning frequently for about 10 minutes.

You can eat it as it is or simply spread on some jam, honey or even pesto.
